Silo City, Buffalo, NY
There was a time not too long ago when Buffalo NY was the grain capitol of the world. All the grain grown in the Great Lakes region was shipped to Buffalo via boat, and was loaded into Silo's, then processed and shipped by rail down the east coast. But times changed and better ways were found to move and process grain. Now, the Buffalo grain business is much smaller and more automated. Silo City is a complex of old grain silos and elevators, an old Malt house and some other buildings and equipment, all retired and de-commissioned. This area is now turning into an arts and maker community as the allure of urban areas catches on.
Its really hard to put Silo City into a story, or even any kind of context. I've probably been there 7 times, and every trip is different. Sometimes you are shooting Industrial Ruin, sometimes beautiful models in Urban Ruin, and other times trying to capture the history of a way of life long gone.

The much talked about Belt Room....
I finally got the shot I wanted. This is a hard room to shoot.
On a very cool, windy day in October…
I climbed all the way up in the malt house and made the crossing to the American elevator.
An older shot of the Belt Room...
This place was incredible. All these belts ran some sort of equipment upstairs.
