Silo City, Buffalo, NY
There was a time in the past when Buffalo NY was the grain capitol of the world. All the grain grown in the Great Lakes region was shipped to Buffalo via boat, and was loaded via grain elevators into Silo's, then processed and shipped by rail down the east coast. But the times changed and better ways were found to move and process grain. Now, the Buffalo grain business is much smaller and more automated. Silo City is a complex of old grain silos and elevators, an old Malt house and some other buildings and equipment, most retired and de-commissioned. This area is now turning into an arts and maker community as the allure of urban areas catches on.
Its really hard to put Silo City into a story, or even any kind of context. I've probably been there 7 times, and every trip is different. Sometimes you are shooting Industrial Ruin, sometimes beautiful models in Urban Ruin, and other times trying to capture the history of a way of life long gone.
